What was SD 2017?
Sailing Democracy 2017 was a teen day-long
youth exchange from July 27 - August 5, 2017, with four countries: Baltic
Regional Fund, Latvia, TURKIYE GENCLIK BIRLIGI DERNEGI, Turkey, SYSTEM AND
GENERATION ASSOCIATION, Greece, and YO-YO, Denmark. Altogether 32 participants
participated, hereof 12 with economical, geographical, educational and social
obstacles.
The theme was democracy and peace education,
and the exchange took place in two extremely different settings, part one on
land in shelters in the nature where the participants organised their
self-organised democratic society for five days, and part two, also five days,
on the schooner Fylla, on sea, cooperating in a very structure frame due to
rules and safety, and based on Danish maritime traditions. Based on this
massive contrasting experience in two different settings, the participants
ended up discussing and representing the ideal democratic system, Dream Land.
The first five days participants organized themselves into their own community
living primitively in shelters, cooking outdoors on a fire. They received money
each day to buy food and walked four km to shop every day. Leaders acted as EU
and introduced different legislation every day based on human rights.
Activities arose randomly from what participants´ wished. The last five days
they lived on the schooner Fylla which was a major contrast to previous
five days. The frame was set, everybody had to follow a lot of rules due
to safety on board. Fylla functioned as an intercultural workplace on limited
space, which called on intercultural competence such as respect and tolerance.
They had to cooperate in a very small international society on the ship and was
challenged on how to " survive" every day life´s actions. The
participants had the opportunity to enhance everyday life skills such as
cooking, cleaning, team building etc., and for many a first-time experience in
both cleaning and cooking.
This youth exchange offered participants new knowledge, skills, and
experiences, which can form the basis of social and intercultural reflection.
Peace education, reflecting on one´s own contribution, tolerance and
responsibility in an international democratic society gave the participants the
possibility of discovering oneself as part of a European citizenship, and as
one who can profit from discussions with young people from different cultural
backgrounds.
